Though classically trained on piano, receiving a BA in Classical Music Performance from Mills College, her recent interest has primarily been in performing 20th century and contemporary musical compositions for piano as well as for koto (Japanese 13-string zither), and free-improvisation in various different contexts, with musicians, as well as dancers, poets, and visual artists.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bayimproviser.com%2Fartist%2F376%2Fkanoko-nishi-smith&amp;h=AAQHZNpAM&amp;enc=AZPfaOmL99r6gC9AL1h3uKjL7HcOtRdUIaRvV-hXu6-mp1hlIAcAMQC2VGiqP-NxIKM&amp;s=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow nofollow\">https:\/\/<wbr \/>www.bayimproviser.com<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">\/artist\/376\/<wbr \/>kanoko-nishi-smith<\/span><\/a><span class=\"text_exposed_show\"><\/p>\n<p>paige starling sorvillo is an improvising choreographer and performing artist based in Oakland. her sensation and image based work is generated from synaesthesias and association games. she creates movement, object and atmosphere impulsed by specific images and\/or obstructions, fragments of text, and emotional\/physical states. currently she is collaborating with visual artist Ian Winters on a site-specific time-lapse video work; beginning a new work with past collaborators Violeta Luna and Evelyn Ficarra; and enjoying Christy Funsch\u2019s 100 Days score. she has presented work in the US, Germany, Portugal, England and Czech Republic and is excited to be headed to Florida&#8217;s Atlantic Center for the arts this month as a resident artist.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro Lopes<br \/>\nPedro Lopes is a turntablist, computer scientist &amp; hardware t(h)inker based out of Berlin. Lopes plays turntables like they are full-fledged instruments, which means they can be bowed, percussed, scratched, subversed &amp; hacked. He makes his own needles and records using circuit-bending and acrylic cutting. Lopes engages in collaboration with visual artists, performance &amp; improvisors. He has played in venues such as Transmediale, Serralves Foundation, Casa da M\u00fasica, OutFest, Rescaldo, Metasonic &amp; Future Places and collaborated with many artists: Carlos Z\u00edngaro, Andr\u00e9 Gon\u00e7alves, Gabriel Ferrandini, Pedro Sousa, Miguel S\u00e1, Hern\u00e2ni Faustino, Rodrigo Pinheiro, Per G\u00e4rdin, Carlos Santos, Manuela S\u00e3o Sim\u00e3o and in ensembles conducted by William Winnant (Zorn\u2019s Cobra), Reinhold Friedl &amp; Ernesto Rodrigues.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/l.facebook.com\/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fmusic.pedrolopes.opalstacked.com%2F&amp;h=QAQH78qMI&amp;enc=AZMyQw6Igf9PpeMr_ZvzVFFQzK_nX6Lb_WEJWOZsH3x-ZYgUcdl0vgLaAyzmySXRZSg&amp;s=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow nofollow\">http:\/\/music.pedrolopes.opalstacked.com\/<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the May installment of the Meridian Composers in Performance series we are excited to present Kanoko Nishi-Smith and Pedro Lopes!
